Why did you choose WVU?

WVU has always been an outlet to express my pride about my constantly-overlooked and underprivileged state. It is a shining beacon in a state which often struggles economically and socially. WVU also possesses a unique blend of the resources of a top national institution and the culture and atmosphere of a small college, which is perfect fit for me.

  • What is the BEST reason to attend WVU?
The culture at WVU is the number one reason to attend. It has a culture which encourages excellence yet does not punish failure, promotes diversity but allows for open conversations, and fosters a sense of academia but also allows students to have a good time. The two-sided nature of WVU’s culture is extremely unique and allows for a more complete college experience.

  • What is your favorite Mountaineer memory?
My favorite Mountaineer memory was watching the 2010 March Madness. Watching the WVU team led by Da'Sean Butler go to the Final Four was one of the proudest moments of my life. Everyone finally knew who WVU was and that West Virginia was an actual state and not western Virginia. It was an amazing run I didn’t want to end, but I was still extremely satisfied when it did.

  • Why did you want to become a PSA?
I know it is not unique, but I relished the opportunity to share the message about WVU. The fact that this is not unique statement shows how beloved and cherished the University is by its students, alumni, and staff. I hope to be able to share the message about this amazing comradery and culture with others so they can understand why WVU is so special.

  • What did you learn from the PSA experience?
As a Presidential Student Ambassador, I learned valuable skills for public speaking, received safe zone training, and learned about a variety of topics from around the University. By meeting a variety of people from around the WVU, I gained a more diverse view of the University.

SUMMER 2019: During summer 2019, Shamil Patel was a project engineering intern at General Electric Aviation in Norwich, NY. Involved in a variety of projects, he had the opportunity to design, test, and manufacture parts. “This was a valuable experience because I gained a lot of practical knowledge and also became more independent as I lived 400 miles away from home,” Patel stated.
