Why did you choose WVU?

Born and raised in West Virginia, I have always felt a special connection to the struggles faced within my home state, so when I began the college search process, I hoped to find an institution that provided the resources and support to make a true impact within my community. Because WVU is an R1 Research institution that values hard work, service, and academic curiosity, I knew this school would enable me to reach my goals and exceed my expectations. I am thrilled to have chosen WVU, where I am pursuing an education that pushes my intellectual boundaries while simultaneously allowing me to better serve the mountain state.

  • What is the BEST reason to attend WVU?
While there are many compelling reasons to call WVU home, I believe that the Mountaineer spirit is the BEST reason to attend West Virginia University. Not only do Mountaineers “Go First,, but we “Go First” TOGETHER. Whether we’re singing "Country Roads" after a win, collaborating on innovative research, or offering a helping hand to one another, WVU students, faculty, and alumni consistently go out of their way to support their fellow Mountaineers. The bond that permeates through this campus is truly one of the most unique feelings I’ve ever experienced.

  • What is your favorite Mountaineer memory?
Out of all the amazing memories I’ve made within the last year, my favorite Mountaineer memory was working on a research project with my classmates in Chemistry 117. We worked together to test and develop an experiment that demonstrates how science can be applied to everyday phenomena. Through this experience, I learned the value of a guided inquiry research approach, and I made some of my best friends at WVU!

  • Why did you want to become a PSA?
With an interest in public speaking and an immense desire to promote the values and vision of West Virginia University, I was confident that becoming a PSA would provide an effective platform to share my passion for WVU. I also hoped that I could improve my public speaking skills through representing the University at PSA events, as well as engage in networking opportunities to connect with like-minded Mountaineers.
  • What did you learn from the PSA experience?
The PSA experience taught me how to lead with integrity and purpose, while also broadening my range of speaking skills. Throughout the semester, I was exposed to diverse perspectives which expanded my worldview and challenged me to develop more inclusive leadership strategies. I was able to effectively practice these newfound leadership skills and use them to further my purpose as a West Virginia University student. Overall, the experience was extremely beneficial both personally and academically.

Ashley Eby with US Senator Shelley Moore Capito

SUMMER 2019 Ashley Eby spent her summer 2019 break in Washington, DC, working as an intern for United States Senator Shelley Moore Capito.  Ashley stated,

“As a native West Virginian with a profound inte rest in politics, I had always aspired to work for West Virginia’s constituents.

The legislative experience that I gained working for Senator Capito was especially useful because it combined my political interests with my passion for science. I am currently pursuing dual degrees in Chemistry and Psychology, so I was able to utilize my scientific knowledge when interacting with science-based legislation. For example, I spent most of my time attending hearings and researching legislation relating to Liquefied Natural Gas. Th i s gave me exposure to policy and the technical scientific concepts needed to understand energy production.

From both a personal and academic perspective, the internship experience was eye-opening, and I am grateful to have worked in such an encouraging environment. I am beyond excited to keep serving the Mountain State in the years ahead!”
